Richard Rogers Amphitheater
Client
The City Parks Foundation
Classical Theatre of Harlem
The City Parks Foundation and the Classical Theatre of Harlem are both responsible for the Richard Roger’s Amphitheater. Mount Morris Park, where the amphitheater is located, has a rich history as the location of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.
Project Brief
Part of a series of projects done to help performing arts centers mitigate COVID concerns. The project was to design a parametric seating arrangement for the auditorium to meet social distancing requirements and maximize the seats available.
Design Approach
Seats had to be sold in clusters of one, two, three or four. We created a parametric program to work out the arrangement in order to maximize seating, and adhere to social distancing guidelines to ensure the safety of the audience.
The seating arrangement allowed for a safe public screening of the Summer of Soul, a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Culture Festival, that took place at the same location, it was known as “When the Revolution Could Not be Televised.” This viewing was the first time the footage was seen by the public.
